Home networks are becoming more common. People want to be able to share a single broadband Internet connection over a home computer. There are many different devices that can be used to offset your home network. If you have never heard network terminology device names like router, hub, etc may seem confusing.
Objective of most of these devices is to control how the network is surrounded by information. This information is sent in the form of “packages”. I refer to the term packet several times in this article. This simply means that the data transport network. I will now explain the purpose of the key elements of a home network.
What is the Hub
Hub is a device that has several Ethernet ports on the back of the device. One of these ports may be labeled “Uplink”. This port lets you connect multiple hubs together, if you run out of ports on the hub. If you do not have an uplink port on your hub, hub can not be easily extended if you run out of ports.
Hub is a device that connects multiple computers in an Ethernet network. If you have multiple computers that you want to connect together, you can connect each hub. Each packet is sent from any computer on the network immediately be sent to other computers. Each computer decides whether the packet was truly intended, and filter packets that were intended for other computers.
I really do not use the network hub modern home. You should always use the switch hub. Switches will be discussed in the next section.
What is the switch
Switch is a device that has several Ethernet ports on the back of the device. One of these ports may be labeled “Uplink”. This port lets you connect multiple switches together, if you run out of ports on its switches. If you do not have an uplink port on the switch, the switch can not be easily extended if you run out of ports.
The switch has the same function as a hub. This allows you to connect more computers together so that they can change the package. But the switch is much more efficient than the hub. Turn on your computer only to send Ethernet packets, the packet was destined. Therefore you should always use the switch hub.
What is a Wireless Router
The router is a device that has several Ethernet ports on the back of the device. One of the connectors will be labeled WAN. Please contact the Ethernet WAN port for connecting to broadband source, such as cable or DSL modem. Other ports on the router can be connected to other computers or switches / hubs that will share the WAN connection.
Router to share the broadband connection, most computers in the house. Instead of having to connect your computer directly to DSL or cable modem, turn on the router to a cable modem or DSL. Now, every computer connects to the router will have access to the Internet.
When you run the ports, you can always connect an additional router router. Simply connect the router to connect switch to switch into “uplink” port of a port Ethernet router. Of course, you can not connect the router’s WAN. WAN port must be connected to something such as cable or DSL router.
Some routers have additional options installed. Most routers and firewalls. Firewalls are discussed in the next section. Some routers also have wireless access point (WAP). WAP allows wireless devices such as laptops, wireless Internet.
What is a firewall
The firewall controls traffic between the network and the Internet. A firewall can be hardware or software. Windows XP SP2 or later includes the software firewall. A hardware firewall is included with most routers.
A firewall is a good idea. It ‘can protect against attempts of virus entry. Virus input my test on other computers that are connected to the PC and trying to infect your computer. If you do not want to run a computer directly connected to the Internet without a firewall. There are simply too many other computers out there that can connect and infect you without even noticed.
What is a Network Attached Storage (NAS)
Network attached storage device is s device that allows the hard disk to a network share. This hard drive is not connected to any computer. This is just a NAS available. This may be a possibility of adding a hard disk of the convent, which can be used in network multiple computers. The other common option is to add a network hard drive can easily share a folder on a computer. However, NAS is not always necessary to keep a single computer.
There are two types of NAS commonly available. The first type of build with the hard disk. The second accepts a USB cable or external hard drive fire. Advantage of using a USB cable or hard drive is the fire that you can upgrade the hard drive, if anything was too small.
What is a print server
Just like you can buy a device that allows you to share your hard drive, you can do the same printer. Print Server connects directly to the printer. The printer is then shared by all computers on the network. This is convent because you should not leave the printer connected to the computer must be switched on to print.
Opinion
As you can see there are many different components. Perhaps the final component that I ave yet to mention is the cable. These components are connected together with CAT5 Ethernet cable.
